Research and Planning- DNA- Little Mix

Little Mix have released a video for their new song 'DNA' last week on the 19/10/12. It uses the same intertextual references to Sin City as we were going to use for our music video. We thought of these ideas before they revealed their video which shows we are keeping up with current trends.

Research and Planning- Video Effects- Car Lights

During our video there is a part where the music slows down and we're going to use the traffic lights to do an effect. We're going to have the artist stood still and have cars driving behind her and then speed it up so that the lights are blurred and the brake lights are really visible to be picked up on.
To do this we will have to shoot the scene with the artist stood completely still and film for 5 minutes. Then move her forward and do the same and continue doing this as the artist moves closer to the screen. We then have to put the video onto Final Cut Pro and speed it up manually.

Research and Planning- Our Chosen Style of Video

Our video will fall into the category of performance and concept because throughout the video the artist is performing a lot and presenting herself to the audience. The point of the video is kind of to sell the artist to the audience because she's not well known and it shows people what she's like. The concept part of our video is that we have chosen an unsual colour theme which will be interesting for the audience to watch. We are going to include many red items so they can be seen throughout and in the locations we have chosen, there will be a lot of red
lighting around. And because its London, there will be red phone boxes and buses around to make it even better.

Research and Planning- Colour Corrector Three Way

To get the black and white theme with the red colours enhanced, we have to use Final Cut Pro. The effect is found in the video filters and called Colour Corrector Three Way, which basically makes the shot black and white and you can choose which colour you want to keep and then it picks up wherever that colour is in the shot and makes it brighter. We found out how to do this by watching a video on YouTube which explained the process for us.

Research and Planning- Types of Music Videos

There are three main types of music videos;

  • Narrative- This is when a story is being told in  the video and it most of the time matches the lyrics and tune of the song. Actors tend to be used in these instead of the actual artists, and the band/group is shown throughout the song, but not always.
Stan- Eminem

  Take On Me- Aha

  • Performance- This is when the band/group performs throughout the entire music video and there is no story to it. It is supposed to give the feeling of being in a concert and be simple.

Somebody Told Me- The Killers

Ai Se Tu Pego- Michel Telo

  •  Concept- This is when  there is no story or anything relative to the song, its just an idea for a video and is interesting for the audience. Concept videos can be hard to make though because they are so unusual and hard to think of.

Dog Days Are Over- Florence and the Machine

Pass Out- Tinie Tempah

Research and Planning- Additional Location

While doing research for Soho, we thought of the West End because its very bright and colourful and could be useful for our video because its set at night.

Research and Planning- Location

Because 'Call of the Wild' is a fast paced song, there will be a lot of edits in the video, which means we need to have a lot of footage to cut and mess around with. If the location was in a city then we could have the surroundings filmed, cars being driven and people walking past. It means that theres a lot going on in the video and it keeps it interesting for the audience watching. We think that London could be a good place to film, specifically either Soho or Camden and it will be shot at night-time as well. Another place we discussed though was Brighton because of the pier and beach there.

Soho

Camden

Brighton

Research and Planning- 80's Theme

Florrie's main style seems to be an 80's type theme, so because in our video we are selling her to the audience we decided to have the artist dressed as she would be usually. And not a lot of other artists dress the same as her so this could give her an edge over the others.

Research and Planning- Black and White Colour Theme

In our music video we think that having the main colour theme black and white will look good but to make it a bit more interesting, we've decided to have certain things in colour to draw attention to them. This will be an intertextual reference to the film 'Sin City' where the majority of the film is shot in black and white apart from the antagonist, blood and certain items of clothing being in colour.
We're going to take this idea and use it in our video by having the artist's lips, nails and guitar red. There will possibly be other parts that are in colour too but we are unsure of that at the moment.

Research and Planning- Spider Diagram

We created a spider diagram while listening to our song, and we wrote down ideas that we'd like to incorporate into our video. Random words that came to mind were also put down and afterwards we chose three ideas to expand on and research into more. They were;
  1. 1. Black and white with some parts in colour- This will be an intertextual reference to the film 'Sin City' where everything will be black and white except for the artists lips, nails, guitar and so on. The colour used will be red because it signifies femininity and sensuality.
2. 80's theme- We decided that the look Florrie has styled herself around is an 80's style, she wears quite retro clothes and her hair and make up are similar to that era. Her make up will be quite simple but her lips will be red so that attention is drawn to them, especially when it is practically the only colour on the screen.

3. The location- We think that the location of the video should be a city because it is a fast paced song and we can visualise a lot of driving throughout the video, so we want somewhere other than Maidenhead because it will make it more interesting and give us more options for shots. We were thinking along the lines of either London; Soho or Camden mainly, or Brighton could be a good place to shoot. The video will also be set at night-time.

Research and Planning- Visualisations

We layed the track down on Final Cut Pro and then listened to the song and put markers where we thought there should be specific edits or shots. We then wrote down our ideas and the time they would appear in the video.
